This family of three brought a unique scenario to the design table: after purchasing a lot adjacent to their father, they wished to build a modern home that unites the two properties and maximizes the opportunity for a large, shared backyard. The garage entrance is oriented perpendicular to the street with a generous overhang that both defines the entry and sets up the central circulation spine that extends through the house. Quality of light and connection to the landscape became early drivers for the interior layout. The shared facade of the house is organized by a single-story band containing gardens, patios, and decks that open to the adjacent lot and offer varied levels of filtered light to the interior. The family living zones are organized around a garden atrium bounded by a two story light well that opens to the sky.
