Located along Calfee Lake in Conroe, Texas the design for this wedding venue creates an event space visually connected to the outdoors. A wall of windows and a new deck provide a connection to the lake. The existing building, formerly a petting zoo, contains a flexible space designed to hold both ceremonies and celebrations.
The building retains the original steel structure, while wrapping it in a new skin. A vertical rainscreen comprised of white fiber cement panels divides the façade into equal modules. Within the gap between each module, a copper fin extends 1” beyond the fiber cement panel, providing an additional layer of depth to the façade. Beneath the roof’s overhang, this new building skin aims to be clean and contemporary while also warm and inviting.
The white fiber cement panels provide a sense of lightness, while the thin copper fins add a hint of warmth and color. As the sun moves around the building, the copper fins play with the light, animating the façade with reflections and shadows. In combination, these vertical bands provide a pleasing rhythm as visitors move along the building’s perimeter to the various outdoor spaces that surround the interior.
